Chemical Locha- Marun Dutta

Marun Dutta is a 3rd year student. He is known to be one of the most hardworking, helpful and knowledgeable students of 3rd year. Let us see what this simple and straightforward lad had to say.
CY: If you are marooned on a remote island in the pacific and you have the choice of possessing only one of these things, which would you choose and why:
   a) A victorinox Swiss knife with 24 tools
   b) A box of 6 red parachute flares
   c) Your 60 GB ipod
MD: A box of 6 red Parachute flares. I love my life and I would like to get out of there as soon as possible and I would pray that some ship spots the flares.

CY: The achievement that you are most proud of…
MD: After any achievement I never feel proud of it .I feel rather scared and nervous as I always fear losing them. Nowadays the word achievement has become so materialistic that it has left no place for love, care and happiness which are a few things I cherish most in my life.
CY: If you could have dinner with any three people (real or fictitious) from any time period, dead or alive, which 3 people would you choose and why?
MD: Mahatma Gandhi, Karl Marx, Alfred Nobel. I love their principles and ideologies. They all worked for peace and humanity.
CY: If you had to choose a movie title for your life story, what would it be?
MD: I am a 20 year old boy and I have hardly done anything remarkable yet, neither have I had a tragic childhood which could be an interesting story for a movie. But obviously I will work hard to do some really remarkable thing such as help people and our society with a new way of life. This would make an interesting story, till then let the course of my life decide its title.

CY: You have a great sense of…
MD: Helping and encouraging people to do their best
CY: What/Who is your greatest motivator?
MD: My society (or in engineering terms the market) and its needs. It motivates me to excel and do my best for people.

CY: What is your biggest pet peeve?
MD: Nothing. I always maintain my cool with any irritating situation or person. I generally try to find out the cause of such behaviour rather then complaining, and believe in setting it right.

CY: You would rather skydive without a parachute than…
MD: I will never do it under any circumstance. Life is a mixture of joy and sorrow and we must live according to its demand and remain composed. ‘When things get tough, the tough get going’ and ‘Life is very precious, live it’ are what I believe in.

CY: You are a bad…
MD: I am bad at every thing in my life in which I am not interested, but if someone can turn my mind around, I can give my best for it.

CY: According to you, what is the height of optimism?
MD: I believe in neither optimism nor pessimism. But I do infact I strive hard to adopt a realistic attitude towards every situation that comes my way. Things can always go wrong and it depends on how we take it. ‘Failure may be stumbling block or stepping stone’. It all depends on us.

Chemical Locha - SANJEEV E.M.

Sajeev E.M is a final year student of our department. A guy with tremendous wit and intelligence, the little guy has been tormenting his friends with his peculiar humour and comebacks. Here are his answers to our questionnaire.
CY: If you are marooned on a remote island in the pacific and you have the choice of possessing only one of these things, which would you choose and why:
   a) A victorinox Swiss knife with 24 tools
   b) A box of 6 red parachute flares
   c) Your 60 GB ipod
SEM: Definitely a victorinox Swiss knife. My primary motive would be to get out alive. A genuine Swiss knife is known to withstand great pressure and remains sharp and ready to use. It will help me build a shelter, hunt for food, fish and maybe even build a boat. I would rather party and live my life on the island than take a risk and call upon doomsday.
CY: The achievement that you are most proud of:
SEM: Being the college football team captain. I was even more elated because I am following up on a list of great people who have already donned that role some of whom I know personally and have had the chance to interact with.
CY: If you could have dinner with any three people (real or fictitious) from any time period, dead or alive, which 3 people would you choose and why?
SEM: a) Steven Gerrard – I support Liverpool and this guy has been playing for them for so many years. I would like to see Captain Fantastic in person and discuss football with him. He is a performer and never fails to deliver. It would be a good learning experience. And yes I think we could knock down a couple of mugs during our conversation. That would be over the top though.
b) Sigmund Freud – I like to think and his theories built on thought have always fascinated me. I would like to sit with him and discuss his work on the mind especially his analysis techniques.
c) Cleopatra – Hmmm….now this is one I will be looking forward to eagerly. A date with the most desirable woman who has made great men dance to her tunes. Doubt if I could pull it off, but since given the chance why not bemuse myself.
CY: If you had to choose a movie title for your life story, what would it be?
SEM: George of the Jungle.
CY: You have a great sense of…
SEM: Discernment
CY: What/Who is your greatest motivator?
SEM: Love and happiness
CY: What is your biggest pet peeve?
SEM: Lack of sense
CY: You would rather skydive without a parachute than…
SEM: Being eaten alive by piranhas/cannibals/psychos/other animals
CY: You are a bad…..
SEM: I’m a bad spendthrift.
CY: According to you, what is the height of optimism?
SEM: Making statements like “I know myself”, “I understand how life goes for me”, “I know what I am”. Nobody understands life or himself. The quest is on and the destination is at sea.

One thing you would like to change in your life
I have never been abroad. I wish to go abroad once.
One thing that you would never change
I would never leave India. (Laughs)

CY: Hello Sir. Tell us something about time before you started                                                            to teach. AG: Well. I have done my B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD all from  IIT Kanpur. Also I have worked as research engineer in IIT Bombay and have worked for IOCL for a brief period of time.
CY: What kind of student were you?
AG: I was very sincere in my studies, used to attend all classes. I was an average student with CGPA around 8. I participated in sports but in cultural I was not that involved.
CY: When did you join this college and what difference do you find among the students of now and then? AG: I joined this college in August 1990. That time this college was under construction. We dint have any labs here and classes took place in various places. I remember taking students to IIT Delhi for lab classes. I and my wife have accompanied students on their industrial trips. There was a society called Chemrecs, Chemical Recreational Society, which used to bring out a newsletter called Chemical times just like you people and the faculty contributed articles in it. Well, students are same only environment has changed.
CY: Sir, how important is industrial visits and interaction with industry.
AG: We need good funding for industrial visits. And interaction with industry is important for placements but before placements and industrial visits the fundamentals should be clear.
CY: You have been a part of industry and you have been teaching for 19 years. Which would you consider better?
AG: Definitely teaching. I learnt a lot. Teaching is a respected profession in society and is much more liberating than the confined 9 to 5 jobs of the industry.
CY: In a student’s growth graph from first year to when he finally passes out, what is the teacher’s contribution?
AG: You know they say 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration and I think the same is applicable everywhere.
CY: What would be the incident that you would remember forever?
AG: Not any particular incident but yes my years in IIT Kanpur were my golden years. We had something called Class of 77, it was a magazine. And we enjoyed a lot in our undergraduate. Our rapport with teachers was excellent and yes that is what I will remember forever.
CY: Sir, How would you like the students to perceive you?
AG: I am an old man now. I am no longer in my 30s or 40s. I am in my fifties and my energy is all exhausted. (Smiles) Students should respect their teachers and the young teachers of the department should take the extra initiative.
CY: Sir, any hidden talents??
AG: (Laughs) No, nothing as such. But yes I help my wife in cooking. Nothing like a great cook, but yes I help in cooking.
CY: And hobbies?
AG: I read general books and help my kids in their studies.
CY: Your message to the students.
AG: Students should be sincere, dedicated, aim higher and think big.
