PLACEMENTS

As the global economic crisis deepens, many companies are reducing the number of campus hires while some companies are revoking campus offers. At NIT Surathkal, out of a batch of 570 B.Tech students, 120 students are awaiting placements. At NIT Rourkela, 98 students out of a batch of 660 are awaiting jobs and at NIT Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, 50 students out of a batch of 380 are yet to be placed. As far as Chemical Engineering students are concerned, in NIT Surathkal only 63.6% students have been able to secure 1 job, where only 10 Core companies have visited.
Even at IITs, the situation is glum. Earlier in IITs, they used to have a placement week where all major companies were given slots and students used to have atleast one and in some cases two jobs within a week. Now, the recruitments happen over a month long period. Not only that, the global economic recession has led to the IITs relaxing their criteria for minimum package, time limit for placements, offered job profiles. Even then, placements have been reduced by about 60% as compared to last year. IIT-D today has approximately 200 students still to be placed when only 12 more companies would be coming. None of the IITs today have 100% placements.
Well friends, in our Institute, contrary to existing fears, the prevailing recession had not hindered placements. Especially placements within our Department have already been better than any of the previous years. Last year we had 17 companies open for chemical while this year we already have had 21 companies. Our placements rose from 86% in last year to 109% this year. This means all the eligible students have got atleast one job.
The average package within the Non-Dream slot is 3.63LPA while that of Dream is 4.97LPA. Many of the students have got a job in PSUs where the package is still under revision and would be hiked by about 40% resulting package would be around a whooping 10LPA.
This year, contrary to the existing trend, many new companies like DELOITTE, PUNJ LLYOD, SRF, LNT, BOC etc have visited our Campus and had given a very good response. Infact, we have had to refuse many companies because of lack of students’ response and their low package.
We still receive calls from various NITs asking about the reason for of having such a great placement session even during this period of recession. We proudly say that no other NIT is having placement better that that of ours and as far as placements are concerned, we TOP the list of NITs. With 160% placements within our Institute, we are more than and any NIT or for that matter any IIT as well.
For this success we should all be thankful to our Placement Department and Prof Alok Ranjan without whose perpetual support such a clean sweep would be impossible.

Placements within Chemical Department : 168%
Placements within the Institute : 156%
Quite unbelievably, there are students in our campus having 3 job offers

* : CHEMICAL CORE COMPANIES
ONE STUDENT IS STILL IN WAITING LIST IN DREAM JOB
More companies are expected to visit our campus in this semester. Chemically Yours congratulates the students on their placements and hopes more students get placed soon.

In the ensuing editions, we shall be giving profiles of the Chemical core companies for the benefit of our third year students who will be facing interviews as soon as May this year. Software companies are expected to visit our campus for recruitments from the third year batch during mid-May.
Also, to help the students prepare for the placement session, Chemically Yours will interview the students already placed from Final year so that students can have a first hand record and are accordingly prepared when their turn comes.
