placement tips from final year students

In this edition, we have interviewed Kunal who has been placed in Vedanta and BPCL refinery and Chakresh Pandey who has been placed in India Glycols Ltd and also cleared first round of UOP at Jaipur level.
CY: What kind of company is India Glycols Limited Chakresh?
CP: It is a raw material manufacturing company. It supplies solvents and other base materials to processing units.
CY: Tell us about the interview procedure.
CP: This company had two rounds. Written and Interview. The written was completely technical and so was the interview.
CY: Which subjects were stressed on in interview?
CP: Maximum questions were from heat exchangers and mass transfer (specifically distillation).
CY: What about questions related to training?
CP: India Glycols dint ask any questions about training to me. But other companies did ask UOP and IOCL for instance.
CY: What is the one thing that any student sitting for placement should concentrate on?
CP: Confidence and body language. Express yourself well and use your intelligence to overcome any sort of communication handicap.
CY: Suggest some way to develop good communication skills.
CP: You can’t develop these skills overnight. Start from now itself. Reading newspapers helps a lot.
CY: So what was the proudest moment for you this year?
CP: Not India Glycols. I would say it was clearing the first round of UOP.
CY: Anything else that you would like to add?
CP: Do not get tensed. Sometimes even the best of us take some time to get placed. Luck matters. Just work hard. ‘Hamara kaam mehnat karna hai. Bas woh karo aur sab apne aap ho jayega.’

CY: Kunal, which companies did you get placed in?
KUNAL: Initially Vedanta and later BPCL.
CY: So which one are you opting for and why?
KUNAL: BPCL off course. It has a better package and good working conditions. Oil sector will hopefully remain unaffected by recession and hence growth opportunities would considerably be better. Also direct application of what we study is seen in oil companies
CY: Tell us about the interview procedure of BPCL.
KUNAL: Three rounds in all. Written, Group Discussion and Interview. The written had most questions based directly on refineries.GD stressed on current topics and the interview was totally training oriented.
CY: What is the correct way to face a GD?
KUNAL: Generally the panel asks the group to choose a topic. Decide it beforehand and go. Be cooperative, it will help the whole group.
CY: Which subjects are stressed on in any interview?
KUNAL: MTO (Momentum Transfer Operations), Distillation and heat exchangers.
CY: What are the few things that any student sitting for placement should concentrate on?
KUNAL: You should know everything about your training and be good at defending your C.V. Also keep yourself updated about technology and current affairs. Work on situation analysis problems and most important be confident.
CY: Anything else that you would like to add?
KUNAL: Confidence matters a lot but apart from confidence you need friends who will stand by you and tell ‘You can do it.’
