HONG-KONG SIXES
The very first edition of this competition happened last year and was a huge hit amongst the students. Cricket teams comprising 12 members are required to register alongwith a manager. It is imperative that the manager of all teams are females. There is no limitation on the composition of the team however. The matches are played with a tennis ball in the football field of our campus and are usually very high-scoring matches. The second edition of this entertaining tournament is eagerly awaited.
Intra-branch Cricket
On 28th November, the day our End term exams got over, the Final Year batch played a cricket match. Their sub-batch CH1 challenged CH2 to a 12-over tennis ball match at the basketball court. This was an audacious display of over-confidence on part of CH1 as CH2 happens to boast of many players who have played cricket at professional level.
CH2 won the toss and opted to bat first. CH1 bowlers bowled tightly and bagged Sajeev’s wicket in the very first over. CH2 was made to work hard for their runs as Nikhil and Pronit tried to resurrect the innings. Meanwhile, there was tension building between Pronit and Khanik and Khanik challenged him to hit a boundary off his bowling. The plan paid off as in an attempt to hit a boundary, Pronit skied the ball outside the basketball court and got out in the process. Wickets tumbled quickly thereafter as Mohit from CH1 bagged Surendar, Ritesh and Malpani off consecutive deliveries. However, Nikhil at the other end held the innings together in the wake of CH1’s onslaught. CH2 finally ended their innings at a modest 42 runs and CH1’s delight was palpable.
CH1 started their innings with an air of dominance. However, runs were hard to come by as Siddharth Gupta and Pronit kept a tight leash on the batsmen. CH1 could not build any partnership as CH2 kept swapping wickets at regular intervals until Khanik came and slogged a couple of boundaries. Sadly, Pronit lost the bet and he owes him a treat at McDonalds. Eventually, as Khanik was run out, CH1’s hopes tumbled with him. Even though Biyani survived CH2’s voracious attack, it was difficult for him to score runs. Finally, it was a matter of mere formality as CH2 bagged the remaining wickets and continued their dominance.
PS: The Chemical Brothers from Final Year now challenge rest of chemical to form a team that can match their cricket prowess.
